Dances of the Kayble Berbers of Algeria
The Amazigh or Berbers are the indigenous people of North Africa. The Kabyle Berber tribe inhabits the region between Bedjaia and Tizi Ouzou, east of the capitalAlgiers. Traditional life was dictated by agricultural seasons and dances were part of the cycle of yearly celebrations of fertility, as well as weddings and other family festivities. The communal aspect is central to their culture. Kablye dance is characterized by a non-stop vibrating hip shimmy and the waving of scarves.
